CLASS OF 2012
Lou Pocock, a high school teacher, has coached swimming in Windsor and Essex County for over four decades. Pocock was born on March 15, 1941 in Windsor.
A standout athlete at Assumption High School, Pocock competed in basketball, football, and swimming.
As a teacher, Pocock coached football, cross-country, and swimming while taking on various athletic administration roles. For 26 years, he served as the secretary-treasurer of the Windsor Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WSSA). Perhaps most impressively, his cross-country teams captured 21 WSSA team titles in a 23-year span.
Pocock achieved his most noteworthy coaching success in the sport of swimming. At Massey High School, where he taught, Pocock’s teams captured 14 provincial (OFSSA) titles and six WSSA championships. Outside of the school system, Pocock also has spent over 40 years coaching club with the Windsor Aquatic Club, the Windsor Essex Swim Team, and other organizations in the community.
Doug Martin, one of Pocock’s star pupils, represented Canada at the 1975 Pan American Games and the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Beth Carmichael, another protégé, went on to a swimming scholarship at Michigan State, while Lori Scott represented Canada at the World University Games.
Outside of his regular commitments, Pocock coached Team Canada at the International Schools’ Federation World Championships in 1994 in Cyprus and 1998 in China.
