Renaud was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the fifth round (102nd overall) of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. He represented the Whalers organization between the 1979-80 and 1982-83 seasons, during which time he submitted steady performances as a defenceman. Renaud played 144 NHL games for Hartford and also spent significant time with the Springfield Indians and Binghampton Whalers in the American Hockey League.
Renaud was claimed by the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL Waiver Draft on October 3, 1983. He played 10 NHL games with Buffalo in 1983-84 and a further 144 contests with the Rochester Americans, the club’s AHL affiliate. He retired from hockey following the 1984-85 season.
Renaud finished his NHL career with 6 goals and 50 assists for 56 total points across 152 games.
Renaud’s son Mickey was the captain of the Windsor Spitfires and a promising Calgary Flames draft pick. He died tragically in the family home in Tecumseh on February 18, 2008. He is remembered fondly by the Windsor-Essex hockey community.
